Description
Join marine biologists on a guided shore entry SCUBA dive and search for the elusive puffadder sharks, pyjama sharks, stingrays, sea breams and more! Help Cape RADD collect data on the marine life of False Bay. Become a marine citizen scientist for the day.
Meet at the Ocean HUB, Simon Town (Cape RADD) at about 9h30. Start with a short briefing on the unique ecosystem of the Great African Sea Forest, with complimentary tea/coffee. Then discuss the dive objective, shark science. Then head out to explore the kelp forests and collect data.
Photograph the patterns of the sharks and submit them to Fin Spotter to estimate population size and movement patterns. Or, collect fish abundance data using underwater data slates, to aid conservation efforts. It's not all work though, enjoy the dancing sea bamboo kelp. Dive from predetermined sites, which also offers the possibility of seeing penguins and sea otters.
Back at Cape RADD headquarters, rinse off in a heated outdoor shower and share stories and log the dive over a warm beverage. We will input the data we have collected into the database. This experience will last about 3–3.5 hours, so you will be done in time for lunch (~12h30-13h00).
