Description
After pickup from Cape Town, travel to the iconic V&A Waterfront to board the Robben Island ferry for a voyage across the bay to the infamous maximum-security prison that once housed various political prisoners including the late Nelson Mandela.
Learn how the island, once a place of banishment, isolation, and imprisonment, is now a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder of the price paid for freedom. Take a bus tour of the island and an integrated tour of the prison. After the tour, board the ferry to return to the mainland.
Next, enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture and food of the city. Formerly known as the Malay Quarter, this picturesque corner of Cape Town known for its colorful houses and cobblestone streets, became home to the Cape Muslim community and freed slaves.
Then, head to the Company's Garden in the heart of the central business district, originally established in the early 1650s by European settlers. Enjoy a natural escape from the city. Stop by the South African Museum which houses collections of African zoology, paleontology, and archaeology.
Continue your city tour with a stop at the Castle of Good Hope, built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment store. Admire the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. Also, drive past the Houses of Parliament, Grand Parade, and City Hall.
Make your way to Table Mountain where you can reach the top by cable car (at extra cost). Enjoy panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also, get a bird's eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard. End the tour with a drop-off at your hotel in the early evening.
