Terroir at Kleine Zalze
Capetown
Terroir Restaurant in the Kleine Zalze Wine Estate is one of the most celebrated restaurants in the Stellenbosch Area and is considered one of the elite restaurants in Cape Town. Terroir has received numerous awards of the years for their hard work and in 2007 Terroir received two awards in the EatOut Johnnie Walker Restaurant Awards- Restaurant of the Year and Best Service Award.
Terroir is located in the heart of the Kleine Zalze Wine Estate which makes for a wonderful setting, the restaurant is both beautiful indoors and out, making it perfect for either lunch or dinner as you can dine by the fire or on their fabulous terrace under the oaks whilst enjoying views of the surrounding countryside and the De Zalze Golf Course beyond. If you have some spare time before or after your meal then a visit to the neighboring wine tasting cellar is well worth it, after all they do have some fantastic wines, of the 12 gold medals awarded to South African wines in the 2007 International Wine Challenge in London, no less than 2 were awarded to Kleine Zalze.
The Terroir menu is brought over to you on a large chalk board and each dish explained to you as well as some of the day’s specials, everything sounds delicious so it can be very hard to choose from! We went for the salmon fishcakes with scallops and the confit of duck to start (which was fantastic). Chef Michael Broughton's philosophy is keeping things simple; ingredients-wise the freshness and quality of the initial product stood out immediately and the complimenting sauces just adds to their deliciousness. For mains we had the lamb two ways and the signature dish the pork belly, which has been trimmed, rolled and rerolled, braised in soy and spices then browned and braised again thus creating maximum flavour. Both dishes were excellent.
The wine list, in addition to Kleine Zalze wines features exclusively Stellenbosch wines and you can order by the glass. The service for us was not as high as expected or as professional but it was friendly and I rate that more than any other quality. I would recommend Terroir restaurant particularly as a lunch time spot, prices are also very reasonable for what is undoubtedly an excellent meal.
