Description
Start your visit at the Nelson Mandela Gateway in the V & A Waterfront, Silo District, where you board a ferry for the 30-minute trip to Robben Island. The ferry offers scenic views of Cape Town and Table Mountain.
On arrival, join a guided tour led by an ex-political prisoner who provides detailed insights into the island’s history. Robben Island has served as a place of isolation since the late 17th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The tour covers key sites including the leprosy graveyard, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone Quarry, military bunkers, and the maximum security prison that held numerous South African freedom fighters.
The highlight is visiting Nelson Mandela’s original prison cell, where he spent much of his 27-year incarceration. After the tour, return by ferry to the mainland, once again enjoying views of the coastline and Table Mountain.
