Langa, established in 1927 after the Spanish Flu highlighted poor living conditions, is one of South Africa’s oldest townships. It played a central role during apartheid resistance, hosting key political events.
Adjacent to Langa is Bonteheuwel, a Colored township created to rehouse people displaced from District 6 and Claremont under the Group Areas Act between 1949 and 1960. Residents lived in simple matchbox-style houses with tin roofs.
