Description
Begin your tour at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, where you board the ferry to Robben Island. After arriving at Murray’s Bay Harbour on the east coast of the island, disembark and take a short walk to the buses that transport visitors around the site.
Along the way, pass buildings and a high wall built by prisoners during the 1960s. These buildings were once used for family and lawyer visits to prisoners. Once on the bus, meet your tour guide and continue to the island’s historical landmarks as part of the integrated tour model.
The route includes sites such as the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone Quarry, and former army and navy bunkers. The visit continues to the Maximum Security Prison, where thousands of South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated. The tour finishes with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell before returning by ferry to Cape Town.
