Description
Join a UNESCO World Heritage Site group tour to Robben Island. Group sizes are limited by ferry capacity. Upon arrival, visitors are divided into smaller groups to fit into buses, each led by a guide who is a former political prisoner.
The tour includes visits to the prison complex and the communal cell where ordinary prisoners were held. Your guide will share the island's history and display materials illustrating former prisoners’ hardships. You will also see the cell where Nelson Mandela was confined for 18 years.
The tour continues with visits to other sites such as Robert Sobukwe’s house arrest location and the limestone quarry where prisoners did forced labor.
Return to the mainland offers time to reflect on the experience and South Africa’s current democracy.
