De Trafford Winery
Capetown
De Trafford Winery is situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm set at the top of a dramatic valley above Stellenbosch, 380m up between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, at the end of one of the bumpiest roads in the region.
The history of wine growing on this mountain farm started with the purchase of the property in 1976 by the Trafford family as inaccessible grazing land. Many of the high altitude slopes were deemed suitable for high quality red wine grape varieties.
De Trafford wines vary in their tasting qualities, but they have a distinctive personality – intensely flavoured and finely structured with great length and finesse. These are naturally made, living wines which deposit a sediment – a healthy sign of a Handcrafted Wine. De Trafford’s maximum production capacity is 3500 cases.
De Trafford is a family owned winery with David Trafford as winemaker. Although qualified as an Architect the potential of the family farm lured him gradually into a full time wine business. David’s wife Rita studied Fine Art at Stellenbosch University for two years, but switched to becoming a professional chef. After a few years in the kitchen and a family later, Rita returned to fine art. Some of her work is used for the Cheinn Blanc and Straw Wine labels. Originals and lithographs are available from the winery. Mavis Trafford looks after the financial affairs of the winery and the beautiful garden surrounding the winery. A small team of dedicated workers ensures that all the wines are truly handcrafted.
