Description
Embark on a guided hike up Lion's Head, a peak in the iconic Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. Enjoy a moderate but rewarding climb, and take in panoramic views of the city, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean from the summit.
Meet your guide at the trailhead near Signal Hill Road, and receive a brief orientation, safety briefing, and an overview of what to expect. As you start the ascent, your guide will share fascinating insights into the history, geology, and ecology of the region, making the journey as informative as it is scenic.
The hike to the summit typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the group’s pace and weather conditions. The trail winds around the mountain in a series of switchbacks, offering a 360-degree view of Cape Town and its surroundings as you climb higher. The terrain is a mix of rocky pathways, sandy patches, and sections that require some scrambling.
Your guide will assist and provide helpful tips on safely navigating trickier segments, such as areas with chains and ladders. Along the way, your guide will point out indigenous fynbos vegetation and highlight any local wildlife, including dassies (rock hyraxes), kestrels, and sunbirds.
You may even hear about the legends and folklore associated with the mountain’s flora and fauna. The guide knows the best spots for capturing stunning photographs of the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island, and the Twelve Apostles mountain range. They’ll be happy to assist in taking photos so you can fully enjoy the scenery.
Upon reaching the summit, 669 meters above sea level, the reward is a sweeping, uninterrupted view of the city, Table Mountain, and the deep blue expanse of the Atlantic. Here, your guide may give you time to relax, soak in the scenery, and learn about the cultural significance of the peak to local communities.
After enjoying the summit, the descent follows the same trail, with your guide ensuring the group moves safely and steadily.
