Harbour Square Kitchen Bar
Capetown
Harbour Square Kitchen Bar is a new addition to the restaurants to choose from in Hermanus. Harbour Square offers good food and reasonable prices. The colour scheme is a mix of white, red and black and a fun goldfish print. The combination of the open plan kitchen, Mobelli couches sprawling out onto the historic square and the baby grand piano give the patron clues that this restaurant has relaxed comfort with a touch of luxury – and is poised to offer value in all sorts of ways.
Harbour Square Kitchen Bar is the brain child of Morne Kayne and Thomas Naude. The a la carte menu offers a flavour filled experience to the myriads of tourists, locals and holiday makers in Hermanus. Whether you are staying at Quarters Hotel, or one of the guest houses in the area, Harbour Square Kitchen Bar is an option for breakfast, lunch and supper.
On our dinner visit to Harbour Square, the two of us succumbed to 6 wild oysters for starters and a childhood favourite dish, sticky ribs. The sticky ribs gets prepared with coriander and hoi sin sauce – it was delicious. The bread that was placed on the table when we arrived was too tempting to resist and we polished off the basket in a few minutes.
For my main meal, I chose to trust the recommendation of the manager, Erica Jacobs. Chef Brandon Souras, who has worked at Moyo in Sandton, prepares a piece of tender springbok fillet wrapped in chicken breast. This is gently seasoned with rosemary, thyme and garlic and served on a bed of saffron mash. It was outstanding. My partner chose the Harbour Fillet as a main dish. It is a tender 250g beef fillet, grilled to choice, and served with sautéed cabbage and bacon potato. We accompanied our main meal with a table salad made of strawberry, parma ham bits and walnuts on a bed of rocket with a balsamic reduction.
For our breakfast the next morning we hungrily polished off the Full English Breakfast on offer. The coffee was good and strong and with the promise of whale sightings hanging in the air, we bid farewell to another one of our favourite places in Hermanus
