The great thing about Constantia is that not only is it very beautiful but it is only 15 minutes from the centre of Cape Town and Buitenverwachting farm the perfect place for wine tasting and lunch. Another added bonus is that the wine tastings at Buitenverwachting are free!
There are two restaurants on the farm the Buitenverwachting Restaurant and Cafe Petit. The Buitenverwachting Restaurant is renowned as being one of the finest in the area and is consistently rated amongst the top ten in the country. Diners are treated to fantastic views overlooking the vineyards and the mountains. The restaurant that was once considered formal has now lightened up and serves great quality food made from local produce, served with a mixture of Constantia and choice international wines.
Winemaker Brad Paton and cellar master Herman Kirschbaum are both exceptionally passionate about wine making. Brad Paton has been awarded a double gold veritas award from a blend of Malbec and Petit Verdot that he had experimented with in 2006. He called it his Rough Diamond. This fantastic creation has joined ranks with the ever popular Buitenverwachting Buiten Blanc and Buitenverwachting’s 1769 Classic Constantia dessert wine. The Buitenverwachting Buiten Blanc 2009 is off to a good start this year - and offers a variation of fruit characters including ripe gooseberry, green peppers, green melon and hints of tropical fruit.
On our first visit to Buitenverwachting in 2007 we ate at the Cafe Petit for lunch, our table was in an adorable courtyard with hanging vines above. The food was excellent, we had the menu of the day and the food was magnificent and must have come out the same kitchen of the main restaurant. You can also buy a picnic basket for lunch so you can dine in the grounds. The Buitenverwachting Wine Farm is a great all-rounder, one of the most picturesque of all the wine farms, not just in Constantia and you have great food, wines and history.
