SA National Gallery
Capetown
Cape Town's leading art museum is home to collections of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art. Exhibitions include paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles and architecture.
The museum is conveniently located in the heart of the Cape Town CBD and alongside the historically significant Company's Gardens. There's a good mixture of exhibitions at the gallery to keep most visitors entertained, and with a range of fixed contemporary exhibitions that are anchored in the museum on a permanent basis. At the same time, there is a regular range of temporary exhibitions which make return visits to the museum worthwhile, and these update and change on a regular basis.
As with all museums, it pays to read up about the current exhibitions taking place before visiting, however there is almost always something worth seeing at this beautiful, classic art museum. And coupled with the spectacular surroundings of the Company's Gardens, as well as many nearby restaurants and attractions in the Cape Town City Bowl, make it a worthwhile visit for anyone looking for a bit of culture when in the Mother City.
