Mzoli's Place
Capetown
Mzoli's in Gugulethu is a popular Cape Town restaurant and the number one spot for a braai and real party! Mzoli's features a specialty menu offering meat, meat, and more meat.
When it comes down to it, Mzoli's offers outsiders a great way to experience a small taste of township life in a safe and fairly authentic environment. Touristy as it might be, however, it's still a great vibe, and almost everyone returns energised from an unexpected day out.
Mozlis really is about the meat, though, so vegetarians beware - there is a generous amount of pap (maize) on offer, but don't go expecting side salads and utensils. Guests simply walk to the open butchery at the back of the establishment, pick out their meat from buckets behind the counter, pay for it by weight, and it gets shipped off to the cooks working hard over open flames at the back.
When your meat is ready, which can be any time between 10 minutes and an hour, depending on how busy it might be, you'll collect it in the same bucket and return to eat it amongst the crowds out front. Most opt for hands and no cutlery or crockery, but it you would like these, you're expected to bring your own.
When it comes down to it, though, provided you leave your inhibitions at home, there are few more enjoyable ways to spend a Sunday than in the heart of a township in the relaxed but buzzing atmosphere of the now world-famous Mzolis.
