Everard Read Gallery
Capetown
One of Cape Town's art galleries that have been showcasing contemporary painting and sculpture successfully and with high acclaim. It's close working relationship with the Johannesburg gallery ensures Cape Town's access to art from around Africa.
Everard Read is considered to be the country's oldest commercial gallery, and was founded in the city of Johannesburg more than a hundred years ago. The Cape Town gallery opened in the Victoria Wharf at the V&A Waterfront in September 1996, and while the original premises were somewhat small small, they were able to create a dynamic gallery that was designed to maximise the accessibility to superb contemporary paintings and sculptures to a wide audience.
The response to the Cape Town gallery has been fantastic from all angles, including artists, collectors, and the general public, and it's now safe to consider Everard Read an important addition to the vibrant art and cultural life that defines much of Cape Town.
In 1999 they began looking for larger premises, better suited to displaying fine art, and subsequently acquired a simple yet superb Cape vernacular building in Portswood Road, still within the Waterfront precinct. Together with renowned South African architect Revel Fox they transformed this simple building into a fantastic, elegant gallery, complete with a full sculpture courtyard and custom bronze gates.
There is a close working relationship with the Johannesburg gallery, and this ensures that their Cape Town counterpart has access to the finest works from both abroad and from within the country. They also take particular pride in identifying and supporting the local art scene.
The Gallery is available as a venue for various events, and is also the location for more intimate functions. It's a fantastic space that is well worth a visit for art lovers, locals and tourists alike.
