Stellenbosch Golf Club
Capetown
Stellenbosch Golf Course, as its name would suggest is situated in the historic and very scenic wine growing town of Stellenbosch. The course itself is very peaceful set amidst mature parklands and surrounded by various vineyards providing many of its holes with a stunning backdrop of the Simonsberg and Helderberg Mountains.
A round of golf at Stellenbosch is very enjoyable as despite being fairly narrow in places, the course actually plays to a very fair level, with a few challenging holes, but all in all a nice and gentle round. A main contributing factor to this, compared to some of the other courses in Cape Town, is that the course is fairly well protected from the strong winds that can play havoc with anyone's scorecard! The fairways and greens are in good condition and the rough and deep rough are not thick but you may find you strike the occasional tree trying to play out.
However, don't get too comfortable as the course will throw you the occasional challenging hole, often presented in the form of vineyards bordering the fairways and requiring some very straight shots to keep your ball in play. The signature par-five 14th is certainly another one to put your game to the test; a tight steep fairway that is well guarded by trees on both sides and then the green is hidden around the corner of the dogleg among the trees.
Stellenbosch golf club is less than an hour's drive from Cape Town and is a great course for players of all levels to enjoy. If you are feeling a bit rusty and feel you are not quite ready to take on the golf course then there is an excellent practice area with a driving range, putting area and bunker practice!
After all that hard work on the golf course there is no better way to relax than to drop by one of the neighboring vineyards on the way home for some wine tasting and a spot of lunch, after all the Stellenbosch region is considered to be one of the most attractive travel destinations in the Cape.
